Are you looking to hire heavy machinery for building and construction? BD Cargo Ltd is the company to contact and you will be glad you did.
Armed with determination and unique concept, James Chiomba, founder of BD Cargo, in 1999, as a young man then, started BD Cargo and it was based in Limbe, Malawi. By 2010, BD Cargo had two business units; the customs clearing section and equipment hiring section. The customs clearing section is what birthed the now iconic freight forwarding company called Townlink Freight Ltd.
Overtime as both strategic business units were growing, a decision was made to spin-off the customs clearing section and registered it with the government of Malawi as Townlink Freight Ltd, letting BD Cargo Limited focus on Heavy Machinery Hire and Container Sales services.
Chiomba’s mission was to revolutionize the equipment hire industry that was significantly monopolized by Asians then. Despite this unique goal, Chiomba says he faced numerous rejections to penetrate the industry before securing his first significant breakthrough.
“Sometimes, when I sit down and reminiscent the business turbulence I have been through, I admittedly say, this can only be God. From a small office in Limbe in 1999 to Chitawira in 2008 and from operating alone in the office to now a big office with 42 staff compliment on pay roll, a lot of changes have been made.”
BD Cargo offers hire tools, plant and heavy machinery equipment for clients construction needs in Malawi. You will find Grove Truck Cranes, Forklifts, Excavators, Heavy Vehicles, Earth Moving, Mixers, Shipping Containers and so much more at BD Cargo Ltd.
Strategies Deployed
Chiomba says, as a startup then, we had to put on thick skin of resilience, persistence and above all remain focused to overcome challenges. BD Cargo has been the game changer in my entrepreneurial journey. Take note that BD Cargo started as a clearing and forwarding services company. It was after we had seen a gap in the private plant hire and heavy machinery sector that we decided to seize the opportunity by getting into the ring and compete with the “big guys.” Where there is a will, there is a way and we did it.

Scaling Product line
“It wasn’t easy to penetrate the market, because of stiffer competition from other established players. Some of the strategies we implemented included charging lower prices than competitors and it worked with our services to go national. Other strategies included setting aside a budget for good marketing, recruiting competent staff, and are passionate about taking the company to the next level.” Says Chiomba.
